Who We Are And How We Got Here
We were a couple of city kids who moved to the country outside of Middletown,Virginia several years ago with a desire to do something on a piece of land of our own. We wanted to play in the dirt. Since then we have tamed an overgrown small farm and turned it into a thriving hub of business and education.
We chose Katahdin sheep because of their ability to forage almost exclusively and because they lamb without much difficulty. We sell them as live lambs in the summer and fall with the purchase price including delivery within a half hour of our farm. While there are a small number of local shepherds raising Katahdins, we are one of the few we are aware of who are raising red and black Katahdins as well as the more prevalent white sheep. Our sheep range in color from black to red to cinnamon to white, and even come with spots, socks, and flashes sometimes. If you are interested in purchasing a lamb give us a call at 540-868-2123. If you are starting your own flock and live nearby, we'd be happy to help you evaluate your pastures and give advice on what you can do to improve them before putting sheep on the grass. We built our wooden winter shelters, designed a movable summer shelter, and use temporary electric net fencing with solar chargers, we'd be happy to share our experiences and recommendations with you as well if you'd like to visit our farm and see how we keep our sheep.
In addition to the sheep, we tried our hand at vegetable gardening and, after a few experimental years, have successfully achieved a reliable 10-month vegetable and herb garden which produces a variety of crops in all four seasons all without the benefit of any type of protection or cover. We are currently working on media presentations to share with others how we've achieved this as well as how we utilize no-till mulch systems in our year-round gardening. We grow (or enjoy the wild harvest of) over 40 varieties of edible flowers on our property. We love to share our passion for edible flowers during visits to our farm or at festival presentations. Our son has his own commercial iris business here, which led to the creation of Iris Hills Farm. He sells iris rhizomes both locally and by mail order and gives media presentations on Iris Culture and Hybridization, and Iris Genetics. Visit his web site at www.IrisHillsFarm.com
